There is something jarring about Ireland’s articulate, smart and still young taoiseach resigning while Joe Biden and Donald Trump continue to walk the world stage.

Most politicians cling onto power until the bitter end. Even when they can see that the numbers no longer add up, few choose to voluntarily go.
