I’m not sure which epitaph sparked my interest in graveyards and headstones. It might have been a primary school introduction to WB Yeats: Cast a Cold Eye On Life, on Death. Horseman, pass by.

On the other hand, it could have been the tragic tribute to an unfortunate Mr Hardcastle. Here lies Hardcastle who by billiard balls was struck, Hardcastle, Hard Balls, Hard Luck.
